Julia Infinitus

Available in paperback & ebook formats

JULIA AUGUSTUS filia is the daughter of the ruthless dictator Augustus Caesar, and he is not happy about her behaviour. He exiles her to the bleak isle of Pandateria, where she is to have no luxuries, no wine, only one slave—and no men, with the exception of some quirky old guards specially chosen for their ugliness. The exile is intended as a chance for Julia to quietly contemplate her sinful ways, but the story, told by an enlightened old boor nicknamed The Hammer, is far from quiet and not the least bit contemplative. At the same time, Julia is forced to reconcile with a bitter mother she barely knows.

Marcellus Durrell has crafted a sometimes sad, sometimes darkly humorous portrait of one of history's tragic heroines, whose suffering is mostly caused by life choices made by her father and her stepmother, the venomous Livia.

ORDINARY BLASPHEMIES

Has The Odyssey triggered your desire to read more Greek mythology? Then Marcellus Durrell’s Ordinary Blasphemies is essential reading.

On the isle of Lesvos, the aging hunter Demetrios the Adequate inadvertently offends the goddess Artemis when he watches her bathe in a creek. The goddess, perfectly willing to kill Demetrios for the offense, agrees to delay the execution if he brings her the legendary Swath of Apollo. "The only creature stupider than a man," she tells him, "is a man with an erection."

As the hapless Demetrios tries to find the sacred object, the goddess interferes to make his quest much more difficult and dangerous than necessary. He eventually returns to Artemis, who absolves him of his guilt, but then he learns that during his travels he has offended the goddess Aphrodite and now must go on a mission for her. He completes the mission but discovers he has offended Ares, the God of War. That too requires a mission of absolution.

Demetrios ultimately concludes that the Olympian divinities, despite their powers, perfect beauty and immortality, are mostly miserable. In the end, he thanks the gods that he is not one of them.
